Regenerative podiatry is an area of medicine that uses treatments which harness your body’s own natural healing processes to repair damaged tissue, reduce pain, and restore function in the foot and ankle. Rather than simply managing symptoms, these therapies are designed to promote real, lasting healing at the source of your condition.
Regenerative Podiatry
What Is Regenerative Podiatry ?
Regenerative podiatry is an area of medicine that uses treatments which use your body’s own natural healing processes — or specially prepared biological materials — to repair damaged tissue, reduce pain, and restore function in the foot and ankle. Rather than simply managing symptoms, these therapies are designed to promote real, lasting healing at the source of your condition.
Conditions We Can Treat
Regenerative treatments may be used for a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, including:
- Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- Achilles tendinitis
- Peroneal, posterior tibial, and anterior tibial tendon conditions
- Ankle sprains and ligament injuries
- Foot and ankle arthritis
- Stress fractures and other bone-related conditions
- Chronic or recurring soft tissue injuries
Regenerative Treatments Offered by Southern Tier Podiatry
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy A small amount of your own blood is drawn in our office, and spun down in a centrifuge to concentrate its healing platelets, enzymes and growth factors. This substance is then injected directly into the injured area to accelerate tissue repair and healing.
Amniotic Injection Therapy These injections use natural biological components — including collagen, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory proteins derived from donated amniotic and umbilical tissue — to reduce pain and stimulate the body’s regenerative healing process. This is an injectable graft which is applied to the area of treatment, in the office setting.
High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) HILT uses a Class IV Laser to administer a non-invasive treatment which uses focused light energy, at particular wavelengths, to penetrate deep into tissue. This process, called photobiomodulation, stimulates cellular repair and can reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation without needles or downtime. This therapy can be given alone, or may be recommended as part of a multi-treatment package, based on the condition you are treating.
Radial Pressure Wave Therapy (RPWT) High-energy acoustic (sound) waves are applied to the treatment area where it creates oscillations – repetitive back-and-forth movements – in the tissue. This stimulates blood supply and cell growth in the damaged area, leading to the regeneration of healthy tissue and activates the body’s natural healing response. This is especially effective for chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis as well as myofascial trigger points and disorders of tendon insertions. This can be used separately or in combination with other therapies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these treatments safe? Yes. These therapies are minimally invasive and have strong safety profiles. Like all medical procedures, regenerative therapy carries some risks, even if minimal.
Will it hurt? Discomfort varies by treatment. Injections may cause brief soreness at the site, while laser and radial pressure wave therapy are generally well-tolerated. Your doctor will discuss what to expect before each procedure.
How many treatments will I need? This depends on your condition and how your body responds. Some patients see improvement after a single session, while others may benefit from a short series of treatments. Dr Boyuka will create a plan tailored to you.
How soon will I see results? Some patients may notice improvement after only a couple sessions of Laser or Radial Pressure Wave Therapy. Most patients will experience gradual improvement over several weeks as the body heals and responds to the Regenerative therapies support of the natural healing process, so results build over time.
Is this covered by insurance? Regenerative therapies are typically not covered by insurance and are considered self-pay treatments. Our team will provide you with full pricing information and discuss your payment options before beginning any treatment.
Am I a good candidate for regenerative treatment? Regenerative therapies are appropriate for many patients, particularly those who have not responded well to conventional treatments and for those who are looking for a treatment option other than surgery. Some patients have greater challenges with healing due to medical conditions they have, such as diabetes or osteoporosis. Regenerative therapies can provide those patients with an effective tool to support their body’s natural healing process. The best way to find out is to schedule a consultation — Dr Boyuka will review your history and recommend the right approach for you.
