Liposana Fat Allograft Injection Therapy
Liposana is a cryopreserved human adipose(fat) tissue allograft - real, donated human fat tissue that has been rigorously processed and screened for safety. it is injected directly into areas of the foot where the natural fat pad has thinned or has lost, restoring cushioning and relieving pain. Unlike temporary fillers, Liposana acts as a regenerative scaffold, supporting your body's own ability to grow new fat cells for lasting results.
Conditions that are treated with Liposana:
- Metatarsalgia
- Plantar Fat pad atrophy (Ball of foot or Heel)
- Morton's neuroma
- Calcaneal Bursitis
- Post-surgical corrections which sustain adipose defects
Liposana FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where does Liposana® come from?
A: Liposana® is derived from donated human adipose (fat) tissue sourced from cadaveric donors — the same generous donation process used for organ and tissue transplantation. The tissue is rigorously screened and processed in compliance with FDA regulations (21 CFR Part 1271) to remove blood, oil, and cellular material that could cause an immune reaction, leaving behind the structural fat matrix.
Q: Is there a risk of rejection or disease transmission?
A: The risk of rejection is extremely low. Because the cellular components are removed during processing, the remaining matrix does not trigger a significant immune response. Donor tissue is thoroughly screened under FDA-mandated protocols. As with any allograft, a small theoretical risk of adverse reaction exists and will be discussed with you prior to treatment.
Q: How is this different from a filler or cortisone injection?
A: Traditional fillers (such as hyaluronic acid) are temporary and gradually resorbed. Cortisone reduces inflammation but does not restore lost tissue. Liposana® is a regenerative therapy — it provides immediate structural cushioning while stimulating your body to grow new fat cells over time, addressing the underlying tissue deficit rather than masking symptoms.
Q: How is this different from autologous fat transfer (liposuction)?
A: Autologous fat transfer requires harvesting fat from your own body via liposuction, which involves a separate surgical site and additional recovery. Liposana® is an “off-the-shelf” allograft — it requires no surgery on your part. The entire procedure is performed with a needle and syringe under local anesthesia.
Q: Will I feel the results right away?
A: Most patients notice immediate cushioning from the injection. As the allograft integrates over the following weeks to months, results typically continue to improve. Individual outcomes vary depending on the condition being treated, severity of fat pad loss, and overall health status.
Q: How long do results last?
A: Because Liposana® supports your body’s own regenerative process, results are intended to be long-lasting rather than temporary. However, individual results vary. Some patients may benefit from more than one treatment session, which your podiatrist will discuss with you based on your response to the initial injection.
Q: Is the procedure painful?
A: The treatment area is numbed with a local anesthetic before the injection, so discomfort during the procedure is minimal. Afterward, you may experience mild soreness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site for a few days — this is normal and typically resolves quickly.
Q: What should I expect after the procedure?
A: Post-procedure care includes keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding high-impact activities for a short period, and following any additional instructions provided by your podiatrist. Most patients resume normal daily activities shortly after treatment. A follow-up visit will be scheduled to monitor your progress.
Q: Who is a good candidate for Liposana®?
A: Ideal candidates include patients with confirmed fat pad atrophy, metatarsalgia, chronic heel pain, or other soft-tissue deficits of the foot who have not achieved adequate relief with conservative measures such as orthotics, padding, or physical therapy. Patients with active infection at the injection site or certain immune conditions may not be candidates. A thorough evaluation is required.
Q: Is Liposana® covered by insurance?
A: At this time, Liposana® is generally considered a cash-pay service and is not typically covered by insurance. Our office will provide transparent pricing information and can discuss any available payment options with you during your consultation.
**Health Savings Accounts/Flex Spending Accounts as well as Care Credit Accounts can be used for payment at our office. Ask us how.
Q: How many injections will I need?
A: This depends on your individual anatomy, the extent of fat pad loss, and the condition being treated. Some patients achieve their goals with a single treatment session; others may benefit from two or more sessions spaced several weeks apart. Your podiatrist will develop a personalized plan based on your clinical presentation.
Q: Are there any activity restrictions after the injection?
A: We generally recommend avoiding strenuous weight-bearing activity, running, or high-impact exercise for a brief period following treatment. Most patients can walk and carry out light daily tasks immediately. Specific restrictions will be reviewed with you before you leave the office.
